Event Description:

Plagues throughout history can be understood through a bio-psycho-social model. Dangerous and strange infections have been a catalyst for individuals and groups to use primitive psychodynamic mechanisms to explain their predicament. One method is for those affected to blame minorities for the pandemic. Covid-19 has created unique problems for our patients through the life cycle that therapists have not encountered before. And finally, therapists have experienced new stresses around using unfamiliar therapeutic mediums, their own social isolation, increased family pressures, and fears of contracting the illness. This presentation will provide the opportunity to examine these complicated dimensions of practicing psychotherapy during this historic time.

Learning Objectives:

Following the presentation, participants will be able to:

1.      Recognize the ways in which minorities have been blamed for pandemics throughout history.

2.      Provide examples of conflicts that surfaced for patients during the Covid-19 pandemic.

3.     Recognize and provide examples of stresses that are unique to therapists during Covid-19.
