What has been the experience of women who have contributed to the field of psychoanalysis? What institutional pressures and prejudice did they face? Who supported their ideas and ambitions, and what were their struggles both with men and with other women? How helpful were their analyses, with male or female analysts? How were their relationships with their husbands, companions and children affected by their deepening relationship with psychoanalysis?
We hope to create and foster a dedicated space to reflect on their experiences, from the interbellum until today, in many ways a changed landscape. In this year 2020 we have been hit by a host of problems and have witnessed our daily certainties evaporate. Yet, we did not fail to notice in the news and public discourse that this strange year is the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution. For many years women fought and won an equitable seat in the public decision-making. For many years, women psychoanalysts have expressed their female sensitivities in the development of analytic theories. We honor these women in this webinar series, aiming to explore the history, context, contributions and lives of Melanie Klein, Paula Heimann, Marion Milner, Esther Bick, Karen Horney, Frieda Fromm-Reichman, Julia Kristeva, and Carla De Toffoli.
We, the presenters, are all women working in the psychoanalytic tradition, interested in what we can learn from the experience of these prominent teachers and groundbreakers.
We wish that these conversations will generate enthusiasm, curiosity, and as much pleasure as it has been for us.
