Your registration for this AAPE event will be managed through the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute (CPI). When you register, you will be taken to the CPI website in order to complete the registration process.
The concept of trauma is a complicated one for psychoanalysis, both because of its changing definitions across time and the degree to which it touches upon the convergence of internal psychic reality with external events. This seminar will feature the presentation of detailed process material from the analysis of a war veteran and will examine that convergence of internal and external reality. The material will highlight ways in which the nature of the traumatic event and unconscious dynamics interact to produce symptomatology and shape the analytic process. The case will also demonstrate ways in which trauma affects character and, conversely, ways in which character affects the patient’s handling of the war trauma as well as efforts at recovery. Dr. Jacobs will respond to the presentation, and will facilitate a discussion with the audience of both this case and the larger technical and conceptual issues involved.

Dr. Sidney Phillips is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine where he twice won the Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award for his teaching. He is also a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis where he served as chair of the education committee and continues to teach and supervise candidates, psychotherapy students, and other trainees. He has written several papers on war trauma, psychoanalytic theory, narcissism and object relations, and psychoanalytic perspectives on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals. He is a two-time recipient of the Ralph Roughton Award of the American Psychoanalytic Association for outstanding published papers that deepened psychoanalytic understanding of gay men and lesbians.
Dr Daniel Jacobs is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute where he is Director of the Hanns Sachs Library and Archives. Dr. Jacobs is also Director of the Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies at Princeton and Aspen. He is the author of published articles concerning supervision and the plays of Tennessee Williams, as well as a recent novel entitled, The Distance From Home.
