SUMMARY

Grief companionship is being present to another person’s pain and loss. The experience of grief companionship in therapy is different than directing the healing for other challenges; it requires bearing witness to the struggles of others and avoiding direction. This therapeutic posture respects the mourner and agrees to follow their lead into the wilderness of their grief and loss, honoring the spirit; not just focusing on the intellect. The grief companion respects the emotional disorder and confusion, and chooses to learn alongside with compassionate curiosity.

Learning Objectives:

  • To define terms
  • To understand the needs of those who are mourning
  • To grow our awareness of our own history of loss
  • To care for self while companioning others
