LECTURE DETAILS

Description: Given the transformative power of psychoanalytic understanding, there is a moral imperative for us to find more ways to share these illuminating insights with those without access to our consulting rooms.

Conventional notions about healthy aging lack a deeper appreciation for factors such as relational attachment, characterological coping strategies, and autobiographical narrative coherence. In The Aging Wisely Project we sought to address these deficiencies; we began by conducting intensive life-cycle interviews with 52 elders, 70 and older. Unlike most studies in this domain, we were committed to grasping the entire trajectories of these lives, from early childhood onward. We meticulously analyzed each story, looking for trends and inflection points, organizing the material in relationship to the developmental tasks specified in Erik Erikson’s iconic psychosocial stage theory. Additionally, given the extended lifespan of elders today, we proposed a novel final life-stage, Elder Identity Revision. Each individual’s unique responses to these sequential developmental tasks determined the success of their adaptation to the inevitable changes and losses of elderhood.

These concepts and assertions will be illustrated with vivid case examples. Furthermore, to cross-check our intuitive hypotheses, we independently scored 30 variables for each elder; we will share the statistical analyses of this data. Finally, we will conclude with a description of the Healthy Habits, those attitudes and behaviors that we found to be most strongly correlated with firm, flexible elder identities, and with a resilient sense of wellbeing.

CME Objectives:
  1. Demonstrate the need to revise our understanding of elders’ capacities for change.
  2. Explain the developmental tasks of elderhood and the tools needed to enhance functioning.
