CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

Description: This is a didactic program targeting psychoanalysts and psychotherapists.

Based on the work of Bion, Bergstein addresses violent emotions and violent retaliation against the mind to protect itself from overwhelming excitation, which may result from an inability to mentally formulate or adaptively contain painful excitation.

Included are examples of unrecognized collusions between patients and analysts blindsiding themselves against recognition of massive emotional forces and painful, psychic reality.

CME Objectives:
  1. Describe WR Bion's thinking about psychotic functioning and the personality's methods of dealing with overwhelming mental pain.
  2. Apply Bion’s ideas regarding violent emotions and violent retaliation to improve capacities for working with emotionally withdrawn and hard to reach patients.
