This conference is for all mental health professionals interested in the interpretive process.
Bion (1965) noted that “… no one can ever know what happens in the analytic session, the thing-in-itself, O; we can only speak of what the analyst or patient feels happens, know what the participants say happens, or the emotional state engendered by the verbalization of analyst or patient in the listener.” (p. 33).
In regard to what we might interpret, what we hope that our interpretations will do and our assumptions about the very epistemological ground on which we stand, our understanding of the psyche, language, therapeutic action and much, much more has shifted seismically. This paper will begin to address the complexity revealed by this shift and some of the implications and changes for our understanding of interpretation and the interpretive process, especially when working with patients and psychic organizations that lay beyond neurosis.
Learning Objectives (Participants will be able to:)
1. Describe interpretation as a process as well as a descriptive statement.
2. Apply the interpretive process to the creation and co-creation of new psychic contents (construction), especially in the treatment of non-neurotic sectors of the psyche.
SPEAKER & DISCUSSANT BIOGRAPHIES
Biographies: Howard B. Levine, MD is a member of APsA, PINE, the Contemporary Freudian Society and Pulsion, on the faculty of NYU Post-Doc’s Contemporary Freudian Track, on the Editorial Board of the IJP and Psychoanalytic Inquiry, editor-in-chief of the Routledge Wilfred Bion Studies Book Series and in private practice in Brookline, Massachusetts.
He is the author of Transformations de l’Irreprésentable (Ithaque 2019) and Affect, Representation and Language: Between the Silence and the Cry (Routledge 2022) and editor of The Post-Bionian Field Theory of Antonino Ferro (Routledge 2022) and The Freudian Matrix of Andre Green. Towards A Psychoanalysis For The 21st Century by André Green (Routledge/IPA 2023).
His co-edited books include Unrepresented States and the Construction of Meaning (Karnac 2013); On Freud’s Screen Memories (Karnac 2014); The Wilfred Bion Tradition (Karnac 2016); Bion in Brazil. (Karnac 2017); Andre Green Revisited: Representation and the Work of the Negative (Karnac 2018); Covidian Life (2021 Phoenix); Psychoanalysis of the Psychoanalytic Frame Revisited: A New Look at Bleger’s Classical Work (Routledge/IPA, 2022); and Autistic Phenomena and Unrepresented States: Explorations in the Emergence of Self (Phoenix 2023).
Nancy Bakalar, MD, DFAPA, FABP is a psychiatrist and practices adult psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in CO. Nancy lived in the Washington, DC area for 30 years and trained at The International Institute for Psychoanalytic Training (IIPT) in Chevy Chase, MD, an APsA certified training program. Nancy is a TA/SA at The Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis and is a teaching and supervising analyst at IIPT. She trained in infant observation for four years under Jeanne Magagna, PhD, who was Esther Bick’s last student, and contributed and edited a book with Dr. Magagna entitled Intimate Transformations: Babies with Their Families. Nancy founded the infant Observation Program at The International Psychotherapy Institute (IPI) and was the chair for nine years. Nancy has written numerous book chapters and written and presented on clinical work utilizing telepsychiatry, tele-psychoanalysis, and tele-therapy for individuals, couples, and families. Nancy’s 26 years serving as an active-duty psychiatrist for the United States Navy has given her a wealth of experience in evaluating and treating adults who suffered pathological and characterological personality structures.
Diana C. Pitaru, LPC is a US-trained, Romanian psychotherapist and psychoanalytic candidate in her last year of training at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. She has practiced psychotherapy for 15 years in Texas and Colorado working primarily with disadvantaged adults and adolescents. Diana has a background in political communication, arts, and philosophy, fields from which she continues to draw and incorporate into her psychoanalytic practice and writing. Diana is interested in developing psychoanalytic theory surrounding early development and primary process functioning – particularly sadomasochism. Most recently, Diana’s theoretical interest materialized in a clinical paper titled “The Look, The Enigma, and The Birth of Sadomasochism” which won an award for Best Clinical Paper at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis.

Time/Schedule: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (Mountain Time); Boxed lunches will be provided during an hour-long lunch break. The morning and afternoon sessions will both include short breaks.
Location (In Person): Room #2201 of the Anschutz Health Sciences Building on the Anschutz Medical Campus located at 1890 N. Revere Ct., Aurora, CO 80045.

Due to the financial obligations incurred by the Society in planning this event, last-minute cancellations (less than 48 hours from the scheduled event start time) or no-shows are ineligible for refunds. CME Certificates: 5.5 CME Credit Available To receive a CME certificate, the attendee must: pre-register, pay in full, sign the attendance sheet, attend the entire conference, and complete an evaluation.
