COURSE DETAILS

Description: The course will center on Internal Racism: A Psychoanalytic Approach to Race and Difference by M. Fakhry Davids. This book "explores the inner relationship between the self and the socially stereotyped - "racial"- other, providing a clinically derived model of how racist dynamics play out in the mind."

Learners will discuss the book's content as it relates to clinical work and larger societal issues that impact both clinicians and clients/patients. The course will assist clinicians to competently treat diverse populations and contribute to furthering social justice as respected members of society who see the impact of oppression on a population’s overall health.

Objectives: (after this discussion, participants should be able to):

  1. Summarize some of the existing literature on racism and psychoanalysis.
  2. Discuss ways in which race and class divides are internalized and the relationship between individual and institutional racism/classism.
  3. Describe how racism can be addressed in group and individual clinical settings.
