Description

The DPS hosted Mr. Carlos Padrón on 01/21/2022 for a lecture titled, "A Game You Cannot Win: Failed Identifications with Whiteness in BIPOC Patients." MEMBERS CAN ACCCESS THIS VIDEO FOR FREE ON THE MEMBER PORTION OF THE WEBSITE. Lecture Description: This talk, directed to psychotherapists of different backgrounds, will address, from a psychoanalytic perspective, the multiple conflicts and tensions arising when BIPOC patients identify with whiteness but inevitably fail. These will be called “failed identifications with whiteness”; why they are destined to fail (“a game you cannot win”) will also be talked about in relation to both psychic and social causes. Issues around racial identity formation will be discussed as well as how they intersect with issues related to gender and sexual identity. Clinical vignettes will be offered to exemplify the complex dynamics at play here. The video recording of this lecture will be available to renters for a one week period. The video will be shared by email, so be sure your email address is listed accurately. There are a few steps involved in the rental process, so please read all emails thoroughly for instructions.
