Lecture Description: In this presentation, we will explore, from a psychoanalytic point of view, the phenomenon of feeling aggrieved. A sense of grievance and efforts to redress feeling aggrieved can evoke inchoate aggressive responses both from individuals and from groups. But there are occasions where the felt sense of grievance can lead individuals and groups to progressive, assertive, and adaptive behavior. Grievance will be looked at from a granular level towards understanding its power as a behavioral activator. The relationship of envy, “fairness”, self-esteem, self-regard, and omnipotence to an individual’s inclination towards the experience of grievance and their mode of “metabolizing” grievance will be discussed.
