Description:
Technology presents psychoanalytic educators with both promise and peril. There is the promise of wider reach and increased relevance. But that is offset by the possibility of poorly preparing students for the rigors, and pleasures, of a psychoanalytic career. Educators face the both-and challenge of trying to maximize the promise while minimizing the peril. As many now realize after several years of the pandemic-fueled adoption of distance learning and remote treatments, there are no easy answers. Best practices for technologically-mediated psychoanalytic education are still evolving and being studied. Plus, the rapid development and deployment of new and emerging technologies further complicates an already complex challenge. In this workshop we will critically review current practices of using technology for seminars and classes, clinical supervision, control analyses, and candidate personal analyses. The overall question is how technological-mediation can play a role in educating clinically competent psychoanalysts with psychoanalytic identities that can nurture a vibrant future for our traditions, and where that role should be limited.
Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will be able to describe three pedagogical techniques for online classes and seminars that can be used to enrich student learning and experience.
2. Attendees will be able to identify the three psychological factors that enable telepresence to generated feelings of intimate connection.
3. Attendees will be able to identify two ways an online psychoanalytic process differs from a traditional in-person psychoanalytic process.
