Course Description:
We are in the middle of a constrained renaissance.  Until the recent articles in the NY Times and the new book by Michael Pollan, the research taking place on entheogens (chemical substances ingested to produce a nonordinary (non-dual) state of consciousness for spiritual purposes) was quiet and small. Today it has quadrupled in size and some believe, soon, these medicines will, again, be legal.

The primary focus of this presentation will be MDMA assisted psychotherapy for PTSD but the topic is impossible to discuss in isolation.  We will look at the historical context for this research, the main characters, as well as outcomes and future planning.  Most importantly, we will discuss its relationship to how this work relates to our work.

Goals:

  1. will have an overview of the history of the use of psychedelics in treating psychological issues;
  2. will have a picture of the current status of research in this area and its outcome;
  3. will have a picture of the practice of this work and its theoretical underpinnings and where it overlaps with psychodynamic theory

Karen Rosica, MSW, Psy.D. is a psychologist/psychoanalyst in private practice in Denver. She is a published author who writes about the therapeutic relationship, is on the faculty of the Denver Psychoanalytic Institute, an adjunct professor at the University of Denver- School of Professional Psychology and an Associate Editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues: The international Journal of Relational Perspectives.
