9:00-9:30 - Overview – Evidence-Based Research & Clinical Treatment 

Evidence-based methods of practice emphasize the role of empathy in encouraging suicidal patients to tell their stories (the patient narrative); the need to hold truly open, candid dialogue, including providing psycho-education, with suicidal patients about their suicide risk; the recommendation to follow Zero Suicide (now JAMA) guidelines including restricting access to lethal means, safety planning, and engaging with the patient family/designated family; and the need to establish a mutually collaborative treatment alliance in order to focus on prevailing “psychache” and the cognitions informing the inaccurate and self-condemning thinking that drive people to consider suicide.

1)       Empathy For The Narrative of the Fragile Suicidal Patient

2)       Creating A Safety Plan: A Model of Collaboration and Shared Responsibility

In our current method of assessment, the therapist may feel the burden of responsibility for the treatment outcome.  The Safety Plan model demonstrates the importance of patient engagement. Responsibility of the outcome is shared by both patient and therapist. This model demonstrates these principles of treatment.

3)     The Way Forward: Acknowledging the Role of Stigma

Breaks will be determined by discussion process  


Joan Heron is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychoanalyst in private practice in Boulder. After becoming a suicide loss survivor in 2013, Joan spent the last three years researching the suicide literature. She is affiliated with the Training & Development Committee of the Colorado Commission on Suicide Prevention and is a Field Advocate, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Joan is a member of the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado (SPCC), an educational and advocacy forum for suicide prevention. Her private practice includes  working with the suicidal patient and consultation.

The course is limited to 40 participants.

There will be NO refunds after January 12, 2018; any refunds prior to January 12th will be less a $25.00 administration fee.

Certificates of Attendance will be distributed upon completion of the course.  No CME credits are provided.
