This panel recovers literature and the arts as foundational to the methods of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Freud drew from literature, both classical and popular, to formulate the most important and lasting ideas and his cases brought him admiration as a storyteller. While he may have denied his pleasure in being called a novelist, he was the first to admit his reverence for the narrative method. Contemporary psychoanalytic clinicians and thinkers featured on this panel are heirs to this psychology of the mind and will return to these origins to share the insight gained from the consilience between literature and psychoanalysis, which predicated Freud’s discoveries of the unconscious. Members of this international panel bring expertise in clinical and applied psychoanalysis to illuminate how reading (and writing) literature in all its diversity offers new roads to recovery for the next generation of psychoanalytic clinicians and patients.

Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to articulate the role of literature and the arts in the development of the psychoanalytic method. 

2. Participants will be able to incorporate lessons from literature and the arts into their clinical practices. 

3. Participants will develop an appreciation for the power of literature and the arts to effect change and bring insight.

Chair - Vera Camden, Ph.D. is Professor of English at Kent State University, Training and Supervising Analyst at the Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University. She is the editor of the recent Cambridge Companion to Literature and Psychoanalysis (2022), co-editor of American Imago and American editor of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics. 

Josie Billington, Ph.D. is Professor in English at the University of Liverpool, specializing in Victorian Literature and in literary reading and mental health. She has published widely, as editor and critic, on nineteenth-century literary realism and on Victorian women’s fiction and poetry, and, over the last decade, has led a range of interdisciplinary research projects culminating in a monograph, Is Literature Healthy? (Oxford University Press, 2016) and an edited volume, Reading and Mental Health (Palgrave, 2019). Professor Billington is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Peer Review College, a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellow, and (currently) Vice-President of the International Society for the Empirical Study of Literature (IGEL). 

Vicky Lebeau, Ph.D. is Professor of English at the University of Sussex. She has published widely in the field of psychoanalysis and culture and is a Scholar of the British Psychoanalytic Council.

Zehra Mehdi, M.A. is a doctoral candidate at the Department of Religion, Columbia University. Her research interests are political psychology, religious minorities and nationalism, trauma and violence, gender theory, psychoanalytic anthropology, and Partition literature. She is a practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapist from India. She is currently co-editing an edited volume, Remembering, Repeating and Working Through Selfhood: Essays by Katherine P. Ewing, Columbia University Press (2023).

Adele Tutter, M.D., Ph. D. is Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University, where she is also Director, the Psychoanalytic Studies Program of the Institute of Comparative Literature and Society of the Graduate School of Arts and Science; and Faculty, the Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She is also faculty, The New York Psychoanalytic Institute. Her interdisciplinary scholarship has earned the American Psychoanalytic Association Menninger, CORST, and Ticho prizes, among others. She is coeditor (with Leon Wurmser) of Grief and its Transcendence: Memory, Identity, and Creativity (Routledge, 2015); editor, The Muse: Psychoanalytic Explorations of Creative Inspiration (Routledge, 2016); and author of Dream House: An Intimate Portrait of the Philip Johnson Glass House (University of Virginia Press, 2016).  She is a member of the editorial boards of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, Psychoanalytic Quarterly, Psychoanalytic Inquiry and American Imago,  is a regular contributor of art criticism to The Brooklyn Rail, and maintains a private practice in Manhattan.
