In this talk, the author will present a clinical case study of ataque de nervios to illustrate the complexities of clinical work with latinx populations and shed light on the psychological intricacies of life in the barrio, often marked by poverty, migration, marginalization, and barriers of language, class, and race. The author will briefly discuss the historical estrangement between psychoanalysis and cultural issues in the United States.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify and describe basic issues of class, ethnicity, race, and language as they intersect among Latinx populations in the barrio.
2. List some of the basic misconceptions about the applicability of psychoanalysis with Latinx populations.
3. Discuss historical antecedents that contributed to the marginalization of latinx populations from psychoanalysis.
4. Describe a culture bound syndrome, known as ataque de nervios.
5. Analyze how the term “culture bound syndrome” is problematic.

About the Presenters:

Christopher Christian, Ph.D. is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Psychoanalytic Psychology; a supervising and training analyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR), where he is past Dean. He is the co-editor with Patricia Gherovici of Psychoanalysis in the Barrios: Race, Class, and the Unconscious (Routledge, 2019); Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Conflict, with Morris Eagle and David Wolitzky (Routledge, 2017); and The Second Century of Psychoanalysis, with Michael J. Diamond (Routledge, 2011). He is a member of the Western New England Psychoanalytic Institute and Society; the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY), affiliated with NYU School of Medicine; the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS). Dr. Christian supervises at the Yale Doctoral Internship in Clinical & Community Psychology, and has a private practice in New Haven, CT.

Esperanza Díaz M.D. provides teaching and supervision for Yale medical students, psychiatry residents, and trainees from other disciplines such as psychology, nursing and social work. Dr. Diaz received her M.D. degree from the Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia. She finished Psychiatry residency at Yale School of Medicine. She is a board Certified Psychiatrist and Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. She is a psychoanalyst. Her research concentrates on adherence to medications, development of culturally sensitive mental health services to Hispanics with persistent mental disorders, development of teaching methods of cultural sensitive care. She has received research awards from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) and from National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Dr. Diaz’s professional interests are focused on improving mental health services to Hispanics and education focusing on interviewing, cultural sensitive services and mental health disparities. She is a member of the American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry. She is a leadership member of the APA Hispanic Caucus. She is the recipient of the 2012 inaugural American Psychiatric Association Assembly Member in Training Mentor Award, and the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents. She served on the SAMHSA Advisory Committee for Women Services. She serves on NIMH and NIH scientific reviews. She is reviewer for numerous scientific journals.
