    Course Description:

Racial awareness is increasingly finding its place within psychoanalytic spaces as a vital source of identity and agency. Simultaneously, our disavowal of racism and the splitting off of the societal and cultural derivatives in a multi-cultural society speak to an institutional and intrapsychic resistance that requires active critical analysis. This three-hour presentation will address how racialized thinking develops and persists for clinician and patient alike over the course of the life cycle as we explore the impact on the therapeutic situation and in the psychoanalytic training institute. Clinical and supervisory examples will illustrate the value of engaging the racial self in modern clinical practice and education.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Participants will be able to identify nodal points in the evolution of race awareness and the development of racialized thinking from childhood through adolescence into adulthood.
    2. Participants will be able to identify subtle ways that culture, ethnicity and immigration history impact the therapeutic relationship.
    3. Through the case presentations participants will be able to discuss how these issues can play out in engaging patients across racial, cultural and socioeconomic differences in the therapeutic dyad.
    4. By openly and dynamically working with issues of racism, race and culture within the training institute and the therapeutic dyad, attendees will be more equipped to integrate these aspects into their working functions.
