Personality Disorder: What's Attachment Got to Do With It?

Diagnosing and treating personality disorders (PD) is challenging.

Within the context of interpersonal and attachment trauma, the challenge is further complicated, controversial and poses the most difficulties for treatment. This assertion should come as no surprise since chronic difficulties in interpersonal relationships are an indicator of PD in addition to impairment in the sense of self.

Furthermore, the concepts of autonomy and relatedness overlap theoretically with different patterns of insecure adult attachment. Although there are ample theoretical grounds to link attachment disturbance to PD, longitudinal studies on the impact of early attachment on later psychopathology are surprisingly limited.
