Zoom Workshop with Joyce Slochower (for CE credits)

A Second Look: A Relational Winnicottian Reflects on Theory and Clinical Practice

4 CE CREDITS for both PSYCHOLOGISTS AND MSWS

Date and Time: Sat April 10
    10 am - 2:15 pm

What does it mean to work from a Winnicottian perspective in a contemporary relational world? Is psychoanalytic process organized around our ability to make symbolic maternal repair for relational trauma? And how has contemporary thinking altered that perspective? In this presentation, Joyce Slochower reviews Winnicott's contributions, her own expanded understanding of what holding can look like in the consulting room and then takes a second look at these and related questions. Arguing both for and against the clinical power of holding, she unpacks her own understanding of its varied clinical impact in different kinds of therapeutic "knots."

In this context, Joyce will also offer something unusual: a self-critique borne of her decades-long career. What did she underemphasize in her original formulation of relational holding? In delineating her own regrets, Joyce challenges us to do the same, to revisit our dearly held clinical attitudes with the aim of revealing their underbellies. She demonstrates how this kind of investigation can result in a freer, less defensively locked-in way of conceptualizing clinical work.
