COURSE DETAILS

Description: The complexity of modern mental health care invites many ethical dilemmas for psychotherapists. Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other therapists all want to avoid ethical missteps, both because we want to provide the best possible care to our patients and because we don’t want to have complaints made to our licensing boards or employers. Although our professional codes of ethics offer useful guidance about many aspects of practice, they cannot possibly address all the potential scenarios that arise in the course of our work. It is beneficial to have additional intellectual tools to assist in reasoning out the best approach to resolving any given ethical dilemma.

This session will begin with a presentation of three different ethical frameworks: Virtue Ethics, Principlism and Consequentialism. Each framework offers a different vantage point from which to view a dilemma. Using hypothetical psychotherapy scenarios, a process for conducting an ethical analysis from the perspective of each framework will be demonstrated. This is a participatory session. Attendees are encouraged to become active problem solvers with each other during the demonstration of the ethical reasoning process to engage in the application of theory to practice.

CME Objectives:

    1. Describe three ethical theories with relevance to psychotherapy practice.
    2. Apply the ethical theories to hypothetical dilemmas about professional boundaries and patient communication.
    3. Analyze future ethical dilemmas that arise in their psychotherapy practice.
