The Denver Psychoanalytic Society's Continuing Education and Diversity Committees are offering a book discussion group.

Description: This discussion group will focus on the reading of Isabel Wilkerson's book, Caste: The Origins of our Discontents. The objective of this book group is to increase exposure and engagement with issues of diversity that impact all of us. To engage in an ongoing exploration of our own socially and internalized restrictions on our identity and self-expression. To aid us in helping clients find their own authenticity.

Objectives: (after this discussion, participants should be able to):

    1. Describe the impact America’s modern caste system has on individuals and society as it relates to institutionalized racial oppression and mental health.
    2. Discuss unconscious bias to increase awareness and competency in relating to racially diverse clients.
    3. Apply the knowledge gained to improve clinical practice with diverse persons and promote racial justice.

Facilitator Bios: Sangeeta Patel, MD is a psychiatrist and recent graduate of the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. She completed her medical training and psychiatric residency at the University of Colorado and currently works at the Veteran's Affairs hospital in addition to maintaining a private practice. Jennifer has advanced training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, specializing in the treatment of complex PTSD and LGBTQ issues. Jennifer is particularly interested in using psychological practice and theory to help increase consciousness, expand global empathy and inclusivity to facilitate a collective healing.
