Anti-Racism and Your Practice presentation by Ashley Heidebrecht, LMSW
January 20, 2021 7:00 - 9:00 PM MTVirtual
Summary: Racism is in our foundation. It permeates our institutions, including social work practice. Understanding and addressing the history and the continued presence of racism in the environment around us, and within ourselves, is crucial to providing the most inclusive collaborative care for those who trust us with their mental health. To do this, we must take a deep and honest dive into the way racism has shaped the field of social work and our own perception. In this presentation, we will explore historical context concerning racism in society and social work practice specifically, and we will discuss the power of narrative in maintaining racism. We will also discuss stereotypes and implicit bias, and how those often unconscious beliefs may be impacting your practice. While this subject matter is challenging and can often become emotionally charged, this presentation will strive to overcome that discomfort and leave those who attend with a sense of responsibility to participate in the eradication of racism both within and outside of themselves, and the knowledge to begin that process. 2 CEUs.
