The Denver Psychoanalytic Society's Continuing Education and Diversity Committees are offering a book discussion group.

Description: This discussion group will focus on the reading of Kiese Laymon's book, Heavy: An American Memoir. We will look at how racism and oppression are imbedded into all aspects of life and how it impacts people and their overall health and well-being. The hope is to look at our own biases and begin to work more effectively with these issues.

Objectives: (after this discussion, participants should be able to):

  1. Describe the role institutionalized racism has on individuals and society as it relates to mental health.
  2. Apply the knowledge gained to improve clinical practice with diverse clients. 

Books & Format: Participants will furnish their own books and be expected to read the assigned sections before each meeting. The format will be discussion by participants in the style of a book group, divided over 3 sessions.

Dates & Times: Discussions will take place from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM for three Fridays on:  April 2, 9 & 16, 2021 using Zoom. The Zoom link will be emailed to registrants 24 hours prior to the start of of the first session. 

Cost:  $90 for Society members and $110 for non-Society members. Your spot for the group is not guaranteed until the registration fee is paid in full.

The course is limited to a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 10 people.  

Deadline to register is March 24, 2021.

Confidentiality: During  this discussion we will follow rules of confidentiality for clinical case material including disguising identifying information. Please do not discuss any case material outside of the class. No recording of case material is allowed.

CME Certificates:  In order to receive a CME certificate, the attendee must: pre-register, pay in full, attend sessions in their entirety and complete an evaluation within 14 days after the program.  CME certificates will be sent by email within a month following the event after attendees are cross referenced by registration, payment, sign-in, and completion of the evaluation.  

Cancellation and Certificate Replacement Policy: There will be no refunds after March 24, 2021; any refunds prior to March 24th will be less a $30.00 administration fee.  Please retain your CME certificate for your records.  There will be a $3 charge if the Society office has to resend a certificate. 

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of American Psychoanalytic Association and The Denver Psychoanalytic Society. The American Psychoanalytic Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Psychoanalytic Association designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 4.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Certificates will be based on attendance and completion of post-program evaluation.
