This class will focus on reading James Baldwin's landmark book The Fire Next Time. Discussion of Baldwin's ideas and discussion of our reaction and ideas about race and racism will be divided over 3 sessions. We hope participants will engage in looking inward at reactions to race and racism to develop increased comfort with addressing experience of race in clinical work with patients and to look at the therapist's or analyst's transference and countertransference reactions regarding race and racism. We will discuss trauma and race.
